Private Francis Lewis Grant, 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders, born at Kevock Cottages, Lasswade in 1895, was the third son of Francis Lewis Grant, a Mechanical Engineer, and Jemima Grant, of Rothes, Stoneywood, Lasswade, then West Hartlepool, and 292 Cathcart Road, Glasgow.

His siblings were Jemima, James, Helen, Jessie, John and Alexander.

Before enlisting at Glasgow on 9 December 1915, he was employed as a Clerk. He was transferred to the Army Reserve on 9 December 1915, then mobilised on 27 February 1917, before being reported missing on 28 March 1918 and interned in a German prison camp.
