William Wishart was born on 30 January 1890 at 84 Pleasance, Edinburgh. He was the son of Charles Wishart, a Printer Machineman from Edinburgh, and Jessie McKay.

In the 1891 census William was recorded as boarding at his grandmother's house with his parents at the Pleasance address, however ten years later in 1901 the family were living at St Leonards Hill Terrace, in the Newington district of Edinburgh.  William's father was working as a Printer and William had become older brother to Charles, who was recorded as being five.

In 1907 William enlisted with the Royal Army Medical Corps with whom he served until 1909. Unfortunately no further information about his time with the RAMC exists, however it seems probable that William was based in the UK during this period.

A year after leaving the services William married Christine Vass on 19 April 1910 in Glasgow.  At the time he had been living with his parents at 58 Napiershall Street in Glasgow, and following the marriage, Christine (sometimes referred to as 'Chrissie') also moved into the family home.  Eleven months after the wedding, Charles Wishart, William and Christine's first child, was born on 14 March 1911.

Along with his parents and brother Charles, William's family were recorded in the 1911 census as living at the Napiershall Street address in the Maryhill parish of Glasgow, William had gained employment in a local pub whilst his brother was a messenger boy for a grocer.

Another son, David Vass Wishart, was born at 2 Hamilton Road in Possilpark, Glasgow on 5 February 1914 and by the end of the following year the family had moved to 35 Simpson Street.
